Akumbia Lodge is the name, Alex Quaison-Sackey gave to the residence he commissioned to be built located on Beach Road, Winneba.

Winneba is a small fishing town about forty-five miles west of Accra, the capital city of Ghana. This family residence was intended to be a retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city, a niche by the beach.

Alex Quaison-Sackey had the area surveyed, purchased plots of land on what was completely vacant, planned out what the "street" could look like and began to build. With his architect and city planner friends, they had the forethought for the rest of the street as it did not exist at the time, and began his mission. At the end of the build for Akumbia Lodge, there would be only 1 neighbor at the time and street lights did not exist.

Akumbia Lodge was created from the minds of Ambassador Alex Quaison-Sackey and his wife Elsie, established as their family residence. Their vision of cultural pride and global connection inspires us to preserve and reimagine this house as a bed & breakfast and museum.

From Ancestral Home to Living Heritage

Accra at the time was 45 minutes to an hour away with the expansion process that Ghana had been going through. As the highway has advanced and expanded to Cape Coast, the travel time has gone up tremendously. Winneba is the middle place between Cape Coast (the old Capital of the Gold coast and a very popular tourist attraction) and Accra (The Capital of modern Ghana.)

The desirability to stop in Winneba is great. Winneba is welcoming where some other places might appear too rural and unapproachable. In Winneba, one can see traditional culture and advancement that the people have welcomed. The people of Winneba didn't take every single advancement that was once forced on them through colonization, they chose what they wanted to keep and rejected things that didn't work for them.
